Meghalaya is one of India's top cement producers, according to the central government's Economic Survey 2024-25. As the world's second-largest cement manufacturer, India has a thriving cement industry with an installed annual capacity of roughly 639 million tonnes. Cement production in the country reached approximately 427 million tonnes in FY24.
India's cement industry has 159 big integrated facilities, 128 grinding units, five clinkerisation units, and 62 mini-cement plants. Most cement facilities are strategically positioned near raw material sources, and Meghalaya, with its extensive limestone reserves, plays an important part in this industry.
According to the Economic Survey, states including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Meghalaya, and West Bengal account for almost 87per cent of India's cement output.
Despite India's domestic cement consumption being much lower than the world average (290 kg per capita vs. 540 kg per capita internationally), the cement industry is well-prepared to handle rising demand. The federal government's continued emphasis on large-scale infrastructure projects such as highways, trains, housing schemes, and rural development is expected to fuel increased cement demand in the future.
