Tata Steel is the global industry leader
Tata Steel has been declared as the global industry leader in the steel sector by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) assessment for the year 2016 out of a list of more than 20 global steel majors who participated in DJSI assessment. Tata Steel scored 81 per cent in the assessment, an improvement from last year’s score of 80 per cent. The DJSI assessment was created by the investor community in the year 1999 to evaluate large companies based on economic, environmental and social criteria and serves as a benchmark on Corporate Sustainability Responsibility. Tata Steel has also received the Centre’s green panel clearance for diversion of about 199 acre of forest land for expansion of its iron ore mining project in Keonjhar district of Odisha. The Forest Advisory Committee has suggested that the ministry should give a final clearance subject to some conditions. As per the proposal, the company has sought permission for diversion of 199.1 hectare of forest land, including 2.2 hectare of safety zone, for iron ore mining and allied activities in Katamani mines in Deojhar and Thakurani Reserved Forest, Keonjhar district.
