The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B announced a 2% rebate in property tax to housing societies and individuals for setting up electric vehicle charging stations. Citing the Maharashtra government’s Electric Vehicles Policy, Radhakrishnan signed the administrative order to implement the decision.

NMC has already been offering a 10% rebate in property tax for houses adopting at least one of the four eco-friendly projects — producing compost from garbage, rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment and reuse, and solar or any type of renewable power. According to the order, individuals will get a 2% rebate in property tax if they set up charging stations for their own vehicles and make the facility available to owners of other electric vehicles.

The properties in NMC limits, where the property owners or institutions have already set up charging stations for electric vehicles, can also avail benefit of this discount in property tax. If a charging station is set up for one’s own vehicle in a place where traffic will not be obstructed, and a charging facility is provided for other electric vehicles, the concerned property owners will be given a 2% exemption from the property tax, excluding the government tax.

Apart from this, if the facility of electric vehicle charging is provided to EV owners under the shared facilities in the housing society, the respective landholder in the respective flat or apartment will be given a 2.5 % discount, excluding the government tax, in the land-based property tax. If housing societies provide electric vehicle charging facilities on a commercial basis on their respective premises, which may not disturb the parking space and refuge area (meant for emergency works), then NMC will not levy property tax at the commercial rate and levy tax at the domestic rates only.
