Late Abstract Artist Robert Motherwell Greenwhich House Sold
An estate that once housed the private studios of late artist Robert Motherwell has a new owner. The estate on 909 North St. in Greenwich sold for $2.5 million, Christie's International Real Estate's Westchester Hudson Valley brokerage announced. The artist, who died in 1991, was known for abstract expressionism, an art movement that aims to provoke emotions and reflect the unique minds of its creators. Motherwell used saturated colors, bold brushstrokes and materials such as paint for some of his creations. The house, built in 1900, sits on a 4-acre lot with a pond. The landscape of the property was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, who is known for doing work on New York City's Central Park, according to information provided by Christie's International Real Estate. Before moving to Greenwich, Motherwell worked throughout the world, including Spain and France, according to the Dedalus Foundation. Sometimes his works would be inspired by political events, including "Elegy to the Spanish Republic XXXIV," a series of paintings he created from 1953–54 that reflect his "generation's despair at the lost cause of the Spanish Civil War”.
