Mississippi Power and Southern Company are partnering to build a smart home neighbourhood in Mississippi’s Lauderdale County. The new smart neighbourhood coming on Mississippi’s eastern border is to feature exclusively the Tesla solar roof – making it what is believed to be a world first.  Other features in the homes will include Tesla Powerwall batteries alongside energy efficiency equipment and smart home automation. The go ahead for the development follows the installation and testing of a Tesla solar roof on a Habitat for Humanity home in the town of Hattiesburg earlier in the summer. This smart neighbourhood is designed to simplify homeowners’ lives and give them more control over their home and energy use. Smart neighbourhood, Mississippi Power’s first, will have approximately 45 homes in phase I, with 100-150 planned for the full development. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2021. Mississippi Power is a subsidiary of Southern Company and supplies energy to more than 188,000 customers in 23 southeast Mississippi counties. Southern Company has been something of a pioneer in the development of smart neighbourhoods. In Alabama and Georgia, developments were undertaken by the respective subsidiaries, Alabama Power and Georgia Power, as part of Southern Company’s research initiative to determine what homes and smart home automation will look like in 2040.
