BREAKING OUT OF THE TABOO AGAINST USING BLACK

As an owner, what was the brief for the overall space planning of the home?

The brief was to design with clean geometry and modern, maintenance free materials. The spaces should flow into each other and that each space should dictate how things are designed around it.

The reasons for selecting the black, grey and nude colour theme for the interiors.

Our endeavor has been to use a soothing palette of colours for most of the project. However, we feel that it’s time to break out of the taboo against using black in our homes and what better way to show it than in the house of the design partner herself?!

Black for us is so powerful a colour that when used correctly, it is an element by itself. With something so bold on our hands we have not shied away from using it judiciously throughout the project, be it on the walls, on the floor, on the counters or even in décor.

The project showcases custom designed furniture pieces. How does that add to the ambience & comfort of the space?

Each piece of furniture has functionality at its core. As the client and the designer on the project, the requirement was to design pieces that go well with the activity planned in each space. The living room has furniture that is perfect for hosting a group of friends and at the same time it is great for lounging on movie nights. Each aspect of the furniture, whether it is its proportion or the fabric that is chosen, has been decided by its use-case.

In places where we wanted some wall treatment to be the point of focus, the furniture complements, doesn’t take away. For example, in the lobby with the Studiosmitamoksh artwork where we wanted the artwork to be the focus. Harmony with the setting in which the furniture is introduced is the underlying principle.
