CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION WASTE MANAGEMENT

There is a widespread lack of understanding regarding the fact that the best time to address the issue of waste generated during construction as well as demolition is during the planning stage. It is not just construction waste that needs consideration during the architecture and engineering stages; the best way to manage demolition waste is to account for it in the choice of materials and building practices adopted.

For instance, wood is often considered a relatively carbon-intensive choice of building material. However, this overlooks the fact that wooden columns, beams and rafters can be reused when buildings are torn down, unlike concrete and bricks.

Accounting for what happens to materials at the end of the structure’s lifespan can significantly reduce the quantity of waste generated, as well as the carbon footprint of the construction industry.
