What were the 5 prominent design/planning trends of the Year 2022?

Biophilic Design: Biophilic design – spaces that seek to connect people with nature – was a prominent trend in 2022. Buildings that are designed on the principles of biophilia incorporate natural light, ventilation and landscape features in the spaces, creating a more productive and healthier built environment for the inhabitants.

Sustainable Design: Buildings that make as little impact on the natural world as possible have been gaining prominence over the last few years now. It is important to design buildings that are not only sustainable once occupied but also have minimum impact on our environment during the construction process.

Minimalism: Following the principles of less is more, designs that reflect simplicity through basic geometric forms, simple materials, and with minimalist finishes were in trend last year.

Automation in Design: Integrating automation and technology in homes was a prominent trend in the design industry. The potential of this design trend will continue in the near future as we can see a lot of innovative and energy-efficient solutions that can make our lives easier.

Alternative Building Materials:  Architects and designers explored several alternative building materials like steel and reused metal containers over the course of 2022. Building technologies like pre-fabricated and 3D-printed structures were also important design trends last year.

The top design ideas that will continue their march in 2023 and why?

Biophilic design has had a significant impact on the way we design and build our environments. It not only helps protect our planet but also has been shown to improve mental health and productivity. As people increasingly seek a connection to nature, biophilic design is becoming the future of architecture and design rather than just a temporary trend.

The goal to design sustainable buildings that minimise the impact on our environment will continue in the coming years. With new construction techniques that make it even easier to adopt sustainable design solutions, I hope it will not be a trend but a way of life.

Smart homes and home automation have a lot of potential to evolve and become a part of our everyday lives. Design and technology will come together to offer convenience and save energy.
