Lighting Can Transform Space’s Shape, Size & Ambience: Ar Milind Pai

Presented by Havells the ‘Spotlight’ series organizebd y Realty+ Masterclass next episode on April 11 had Mumbai based architect Milind Pai,CEO & Founder Milind Pai Architects in conversation with Sudeshna Mukhopadhay, Vice President, Havells India Ltd discussing the behaviour of light and its application for creating dynamic spaces.

Architect Milind Pai explaining the types of lighting, lighting fixtures and key parameters for lighting in design emphasized on the lighting design’s ability to influence the aesthetics of a given space. 

In his presentation architect Pai demonstrated the impact of lighting in residential, commercial, hospitalit, institutional, retail and health facilities and the type of lighting most suitable for each function. He also highlighted how a designer can create a dramatic interplay of light and dark in the landscape and on building facades by strategic positioning of exterior lighting fixtures. 

Ar Milind Pai added, “Most designer have their favourite lighting setting for correct rendition of interior spaces. We partnered with one of the lighting manufacturers to supply us fixtures with Co-Related Colour Temperature (CCT) 3500 K as it enhances most colours equally.”

Sudeshna Mukhopadhay was of the view that as a solution provider, it is important for them to understand the architect’s specific needs so they can create specific solutions as well as develop products as per market needs. 

On the health aspect of lighting design, both the speaker concurred that given employees spend maximum time indoors it is essential the artificial lighting matches the human circadian cycle. “The seamless transition from outdoors to indoors with respect to lighting to avoid sudden change is an area of improvement,” said Ar Milind Pai.

The session concluded with the speakers emphasising on the continuous research in the field of design. As Sudeshna Mukhopadhay stated, “The fields of lighting and architecture are constantly evolving and lighting industry too needs to keep pace with the changes to address the evolving needs.”
