Ministries join the cause of ISSDA, stresses on the use of stainless steel for water management
Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA), the apex body of stainless steel industry, organised a cross-functional seminar among Ministries of Water & Sanitation, Housing & Urban Affairs and Steel, to deliberate over sustainable solutions in plugging nearly 40% water leakages in water distribution systems. On this occasion, ISSDA released a compendium titled ‘Stainless Steel for Water Service Pipelines, Treatment and Storage 2017’. Highlighting the problem of water leakage due to corroding pipelines, Dr. Aruna Sharma, Secretary, Ministry of Steel expressed concern on the massive water loss and contamination due to corrosion in water pipelines. “The loss in quality of water and subsequent losses due to contamination results in health issues. These aspects are to be considered when selecting a material for pipe lines”, she said. Highlighting the losses to the economy and society, Abhyuday Jindal, Vice Chairman - Jindal Stainless, said, “We can contain the financial loss caused by contaminated water to Indian economy and society by using long term solutions. Approximately Rs.36,600 crore is the estimated loss to the economy and society which is almost seven times the size of Irrigation Fund Corpus as per Indian Budget 2017”. The seminar was attended by Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. The event highlighted international examples like cities like Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei which shifted to stainless steel service pipelines almost 20 years back, cutting back water losses from as much as 27% to 2%. Adding his views on behalf of the industry, KK Pahuja, President, ISSDA said, “ISSDA has been at the forefront for promoting Stainless Steel across various industries. We aim to highlight the engineering properties of Stainless Steel, making it the most preferred choice of material. Water and stainless steel are just made for each other. Stainless Steel provides cost effective solution to water management, after factoring in high economic and social cost water loss”, he added.
