The much-awaited multi-crore economic city, a project that aims at developing townships in the suburbs that comes under the limits of the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is finally going to take shape.

The GCDA will submit a detailed concept plan of the project to the State Government next week and the process of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) would begin after the Government gives approval for the plan.

The economic city is planned to be set up along the proposed 100-km-long ring road connecting Angamaly with Ezhupunna in Alappuzha through Puthencruz, Mulanthuruthy and Poothotta.

The urban expansion master plan aims to retain the city centre as a ‘Sponge City’ and develop three satellites town around the city. The move is aimed at saving the central business district area of the city from the challenges of flooding and the alarming rise of sea water level by shifting the city to the eastern and northeastern parts of the districts.

According to GCDA authorities, the development of an economic city along the Ring Road would result in the gradual shift of the city to the eastern and northeastern part of the district. The authority has already approached the State Government for a fund of Rs 80 crore for preparing the DPR of the project and is likely to consider a global agency for the preparation of DPR. Of the 100 km proposed Ring Road, the 50 km stretch from Angamaly to Kundannoor would be constructed by the National Highways Authority of India.
