Buffeted by Covid-19 headwinds, the state’s town planning wing is mulling a proposal to frame a new set of building bylaws, which will allow construction in a way to maintain social distancing. The department will permit small plot owners (90 sq metre) to increase the height of the construction. A senior town planner said, “The basic requirement for per person is nine square metre area. As per the assessments, in hotspots of the city, where infections were transmitted, people were living in less than 5sqm area. Considering the fact, the department is devising low rise, high density plan.” Known for its independent housing culture and residential vibe, Jaipur is now witnessing scarcity of land. Crammed living space is making it difficult for families to maintain social distancing. If height relaxation is given on smaller plots, it would provide relief to those who cannot afford bigger plots. If new rules are implemented, over 60% plot owners will be benefited.
