Architect Dikshu Kukreja: “Design with Nature Not at the Cost of Nature”
Havells Insignia presents ADEX: A series organised by Realty+ Masterclass presented globally renowned architect Dikshu C Kukreja, Managing Principal Architect, C. P. Kukreja Architects, more recently in news for the Indian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, that was recognised as “One of the most iconic pavilion” by the American Institute of Architects. Architect Kukreja spoke about his projects and how various design features such as the strategic placing of trees and water bodies, use of Jaalis and kinetic façade had been instrumental in bringing natural light and ventilation to the building interiors and they also reduced the air conditioning and artificial lighting loads for the building. “Climate change is a reality and we as designers have a responsibility towards creating built spaces that are in sync with natural elements and surroundings,” said Architect Dikshu Kukreja. Through his presentation, he gave examples of Thames River rejuvenation in London and the historic, elevated rail line in New York City which has been transformed into a public park and walkway. Nearer home, he presented his project of a transit-oriented project in New Delhi which is being built on a metro line and is designed with abundant greenery and public amenities. Sharing his thoughts on the current times, he was of the opinion that the pandemic’s biggest impact has been a lifestyle change. “We now want to be closer to the family and spend more time with our loved ones. This has influenced the way we work and live and is also getting reflected in the way we are designing our buildings now. Also, the mindset should now shift from the capital costs of the building to the operating costs as the building life span is quite big, even outliving us.” According to him, technology has been an enabler in many ways. “The kinetic façade at the India Pavilion at Dubai Expo is an example of the use of technology to solve a design problem and address the light and ventilation issue,” Architect Dikshu Kukreja stated. Vivek Yadav, Senior Vice President, Havells India Limited expressing similar sentiments said, “A contextual design stands the test of time and technology that changes from time to time can aid the building in tackling the changing needs and requirements of the occupants.
