Brighton has earned a top spot in a global list of the most walkable cities, coming in third worldwide according to a recent survey by Time Out. 88% of residents rated the city's walkability highly and described it as “amazing” or “good.” The survey, which polled over 18,500 people, highlights the growing trend of people seeking cities that are easy to navigate on foot, with the added benefits of healthier, happier living and improved air quality due to fewer cars and better public transport.
Nestled on the south coast of England, Brighton is a seaside treasure surrounded by the rolling green hills of the South Downs. Known for its pebble beach, iconic colourful beach huts, and vibrant streets full of local boutiques and cafes, the city offers a picturesque environment perfect for pedestrians. One of its most famous areas is The Lanes, a maze-like network of narrow streets full of quirky shops and cafes, making it a perfect spot to explore on foot.
Brighton’s welcoming atmosphere, vibrant pier, and thriving vegan food scene have made it a popular destination for locals and Londoners seeking a coastal escape. A standout feature of the city is the historic Brighton Palace Pier, which has been welcoming visitors since 1899. It offers fairground rides, restaurants, and fantastic views of the sea. A more recent addition to the skyline is the Brighton i360, a 162-metre observation tower that provides stunning panoramic views of the coastline, city, and South Downs.
Even on rainy days, Brighton offers a wealth of indoor attractions, such as the Royal Pavilion, with its striking domes and minarets inspired by the Taj Mahal, and Sea Life Brighton, the world’s oldest operating aquarium, featuring Gothic arches from 1872 and an interactive rock pool.
Other UK cities that made the top 20 for walkability include Edinburgh, Cardiff, and London, ranked seventh, tenth, and eighteenth, respectively. Edinburgh’s compact city centre with an excellent tram and bus service, Cardiff’s walkable central area, and London’s vast array of public transport options contributed to their high rankings.
