World's 1st Bunker Made From 100% Recycled Materials In India

R+D Studio, designed a Permanent Defence (Bunker) for the Indian Army. This pioneering project presents a significant leap forward in military infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and the safety of our brave soldiers.

Tasked by the 2 Engineer Regiment of the Chinar Corps, Indian Army, engaged Studio to design and implement a pilot outpost at 14,000 feet near Razdan Pass, Jammu & Kashmir, to improve conditions for soldiers enduring harsh weather.

Inspired by sandbag constructions, the firm created 13" x 9" x 6" Silica Composite Hollow Blocks (SCHB) made entirely from recycled foundry dust and plastic waste. These blocks, which are three times stronger than traditional bricks, weigh 7.5 kg each and offer superior durability. The Bunker, constructed with 1800 interlocking SCHBs, requires only a hammer for assembly. Built in just 3 days.

The structure's walls start with three layers from the ground, narrowing to two and finally one at the top. Designed to withstand 25 feet of snowfall, the PD's roof ensures resilience. Each layer is compacted with earth, providing thermal comfort and making the SCHB wall impenetrable and bulletproof. An Infra-Red Heating System (IRHS) plate ensures warmth even at -20°C. Additionally, the SCHBs offer protection against enemy fire and can be recycled for future use.
