World’s Largest Football Stadium In Morocco

The Grand Stade Hassan II, a colossal sporting venue currently under construction in Casablanca, Morocco, is set to redefine the concept of a modern stadium. Designed by architecture firm Oualalou + Choi in collaboration with global sports design experts Populous, this ambitious project is projected to become the largest football stadium in the world.

Drawing inspiration from the traditional Moroccan social gatherings known as ‘moussem,’ the stadium’s design incorporates a grand tented rooftop that dominates the forested landscape. This sculptural architectural feature not only provides shelter for the 115,000-capacity crowd but also creates a sense of community and togetherness. The rooftop will be made from a unique aluminum lattice. A ring of thirty-two stairways supports the roof and bowl, forming grand entrances framed by lush gardens elevated on 28-meter platforms.

The interior of the stadium by Oualalou + Choi and Populous is equally impressive, with three steep tiers at each end ensuring a vibrant and immersive atmosphere for spectators. The hospitality areas, including VIP and VVIP lounges, offer a luxury experience for those seeking a more exclusive match-day. One of the most distinctive features of the Grand Stade Hassan II is its extensive use of greenery. The stadium is surrounded by botanical gardens which create a peaceful oasis within the urban environment — the architects integrate these gardens into the stadium’s design, with lush landscaping visible from the stands and concourses.

‘The Grand Stade Hassan II is deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, with its traditions and contemporary expressions, ‘ says Tarik Oualalou, Design Principal and founding partner at Oualalou + Choi and Lead Architect for the project. ‘It is rooted in ancient and primordial figures: the Moussem, the tent, and the garden, as well as the topography and landscapes of Morocco. It’s a generous space, open to the world and respectful to the Nature it protects. The Grand Stade Hassan II de Casablanca is the embodiment of the great tradition of Moroccan hospitality. ‘

The Grand Stade Hassan II stadium is designed by Oualalou + Choi and Populous as a symbol of Morocco’s ambition to become a global sporting powerhouse. The stadium is planned to meet the highest standards of FIFA competitions, including the ability to host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. It will also serve as the home ground for two local football clubs. The Grand Stade Hassan II is a testament to the vision of King Mohammed VI, who has championed the development of Morocco’s sporting infrastructure. As construction progresses, the stadium is shaping up to be a truly iconic landmark that will not only enhance the country’s sporting reputation but also serve as a source of pride for the Moroccan people.

‘The Grand Stade Hassan II will provide extraordinary spaces that create exceptional experiences for every fan and every visitor, ‘adds François Clément, Senior Principal, President of Populous France and Lead Architect for the project. ‘It is a cornerstone of King Mohammed VI’s vision to develop Morocco’s football infrastructure that will elevate Morocco to the highest global platform of sporting infrastructure development. ‘
