Rethinking Data Centre Sustainability on World Environment Day

Data centers are the driving force behind the digital revolution, enabling advanced cloud solutions and AI-powered large language models (LLMs), with capacity projected to double to 1,645 MW by 2026. However, this rapid growth comes at a significant environmental cost.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global data center energy consumption reached 460 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2022, with projections to surpass 1,000 TWh by 2026—equivalent to Japan’s current electricity consumption. This surge presents a critical challenge: how can we scale sustainably without compromising innovation?

With an ambition to reach net-zero by 2031, adopting innovative green energy, water and waste management, technologies are not just an afterthought but are integral to data center designs and operations from day one. One has to integrate energy-efficient cooling systems and harness new-age renewable energy sources, including hydrogen ready fuel-cell technology to minimize our environmental footprint.

While the rise of AI-driven applications is contributing to increased energy demands, AI itself offers a solution to this challenge. By harnessing the power of real-time performance analytics and AI-driven technologies, one can optimize and enhance data center operations with a strong focus on energy efficiency.

By detecting early signs of equipment issues, we prevent energy losses and optimize consumption, reducing environmental impact. AI-driven fault detection and diagnostics algorithms enable predictive maintenance, improving equipment performance, while intelligent insights drive proactive decision-making and productivity. This approach sets new benchmarks for operational excellence, reinforcing our commitment to building a more sustainable and efficient infrastructure.

In line with our commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2031, we have a decarbonization road map, which prioritizes emission reduction through a combination of supply-side interventions, innovative technologies, and partnerships.

As the first data center company in India to join the RE100 initiative, Nxtra joined a league of leading companies committed to sourcing 100% renewable energy. In an effort to be future-ready, we are the first data center company in India to deploy a low environmental impact, hydrogen-ready fuel cells as future-proof alternative to conventional energy solutions, thus enhancing energy efficiency while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
