Greeks allocate a higher percentage of their income to housing than citizens of other European Union member states. The average across the EU is 19.7%.
According to Eurostat data for 2023, Greeks spent 35.2% of their total disposable income on housing, followed by Danes at 25.9% and Germans in third place at 25.2%. Other countries with lower percentages include Sweden (23.9%), the Netherlands (22.9%), the Czech Republic (22.1%), and Bulgaria (21.2%).
Countries such as Hungary, Romania, Austria (19%) and Finland (19.3%) are closer to the EU average. On the opposite end, the lowest percentages are reported by Cyprus at 11.6%, Malta at 12% and Slovenia at 13.8%.
