A Texas-based construction tech firm is set to introduce the world's first 3D-printed desert resort. Austin's ICON is behind this ambitious project, which will mark a new era in building construction and reimagine the future of travel.
The site of this innovative development will be El Cosmico, a well-known 21-acre hotel, campground, and festival site founded by Liz Lambert. El Cosmico, which offers a unique, laid-back experience, is expanding into a sprawling 60-acre space, significantly increasing its capacity and offering new amenities for guests. The updated site will also relocate closer to Big Bend National Park, offering a more scenic location two hours from its original spot.
At the heart of this expansion are 43 new hotel units, 18 private 3D-printed homes, and various communal spaces designed to foster immersive art experiences. Guests can also look forward to enjoying a bathhouse, a vast infinity pool, and a restaurant led by a James Beard-nominated chef. The 3D-printed homes will be an exclusive addition, with each residence offering modern amenities and spectacular views of the West Texas desert.
The new site, due to open in 2026, aims to preserve the essence of the original El Cosmico, which was heavily influenced by Lambert's childhood experiences in Marfa, Texas. The designs of the buildings will reflect the desert landscape, incorporating rounded shapes, dramatic arches, and tones inspired by the local terrain. The 3D-printing process will use materials sourced directly from the surrounding environment, including sand, soil, and natural tones. This innovative building technique creates unique architectural features that would be difficult to achieve with traditional construction methods.
In addition to the hotel units, luxury three and four-bedroom homes, ranging from 2,000 to 2,500 square feet, will be for sale. These homes will be linked to the hotel and offer residents a private, high-end experience, complete with a hot tub, a covered patio, and stunning desert views. Prices for these homes are expected to start at around $2.29 million.
The original site will remain operational until 2025 for those eager to experience the current El Cosmico before the new development opens. As technology continues to shape how we live and travel, this 3D-printed desert oasis is a testament to how innovation can transform the hospitality industry and offer a new kind of getaway.
