To enable free flow of rainwater, it is required to have integrated drainage system. Improper integration of the drainage system especially near the flyovers or the underpasses or in densely populated areas makes the situation worse.
Before starting construction of any drain, the PWD should make a blueprint of the area to understand the slope and level of road for smooth construction. This would enable them to construct efficient drains with adequate return period. Most of the found that time it is the drains has been designed without considering the return period and rainfall data analysis of last 30 years.
Storm water drains are often choked by municipal solid waste and demolition waste. It is suggested to construct the drains with proper cover to avoid the solid waste entry. Also, faulty designs of roads, flyovers and underpasses without studying the slope and level and flow of water in the area add on to water logging woe. The drains mainly along the roads, flyovers and underpasses should be corrected in a way that the slope of the roads matches the drains.
It will be easy to deal with the water logging and enable swift switch towards transformation, if citizens and administration join hands together. Water-Sensitive Urban Design and Planning; green & blue infrastructure; revisit or prepare drainage master plans with strict action on encroachment over drain and lastly most important solid waste management are some approach to mitigate the water logging problems.
