Workplace Ergonomics For Health & Productivity

Everyone talks about it, but what exactly is Ergonomics, especially in the context of a workplace?

Ergonomics is about designing for people. Defined as the science of fitting a workplace to the user’s needs, ergonomics aims to increase employee efficiency and productivity and reduce discomfort.

Think about the angle of your computer monitor, or the height of your desk. Think about whether your eyes are strained by the end of the day or if your wrists hurt from typing. A sound understanding of ergonomics can prevent most workplace injuries by adjusting tools to the user, putting an emphasis on proper posture to reduce the impact of repetitive movements.

The use of computers and rapidly changing technology in the modern workplace has greatly increased the need for ergonomics. Desks, chairs, monitors, keyboards and lighting all need to be assessed when creating a workspace, whether it is at the office or at home.

Ergonomics also takes into account the need for movement throughout the day. Office furniture has traditionally encouraged stiff, fixed postures and little movement. However, a balance between sitting and standing, which can be aided with a height-adjustable desk, is a proven way to combat the effects of sedentary workplace behaviour.

Why is ergonomics in the workplace key to employee health, comfort and productivity?

Using ergonomic furniture and equipment which are designed to support extended hours of work without compromising comfort, can significantly reduce physical discomfort, leading to fewer distractions and a more engaged workforce. Additionally, an innovative sit-stand desk provides employees with flexibility to shift between sitting and standing postures, fostering movement throughout the day. This adaptability not only enhances physical well-being but also helps employees feel more energised.

By integrating products which promotes movement with an easy-to-use sit-stand solution, businesses can create collaborative spaces and areas designed for work and relaxation. These setups support employee well-being and productivity, creating a positive feedback loop where employees feel valued and motivated to perform at their best.

What are your plans to expand presence and adapt to the Indian market?

One of our strategies is to manufacture products locally (thro S Cube), reducing shipping distances and costs. For example, we plan to start manufacturing chairs, monitor arms, and the Liberty Chair in India in the next 2-3 months. This will not only make our products more affordable for Indian customers but also create more jobs in the region.

Our other strategy is to expand our Retail presence in India. Humanscale, which until recently primarily followed a B2B sales model, now sees a huge potential in retail.

In India, our Retail target audience includes high-net-worth individuals, SMEs, and business owners seeking ergonomic solutions for their home offices or personal office spaces. S Cube has initiated steps to expand our retail presence in India by establishing presence in 50 multi-branded stores by mid-2026 in collaboration with local retail partners. In addition to Tier 1 cities, Humanscale would also focus on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India where it sees huge potential for retail sales of its ergonomic products.
