Amazon to Invest Additional $13 Billion in India's AI, Cloud Infrastructure

Amazon has announced an additional investment of $13 billion to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure in India, raising its total planned investment in the country to $48 billion between 2026 and 2030. The move underscores the company's growing confidence in India as a strategic market for AI, cloud computing, ecommerce and digital services.

The fresh investment comes less than a year after Amazon committed $35 billion across its businesses in India in 2025. Together, the investments will strengthen the company's presence across cloud infrastructure, ecommerce operations, logistics and AI capabilities while supporting the country's digital transformation ambitions.

A significant portion of the new investment will be directed towards expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre infrastructure in Mumbai and Hyderabad. The additional capacity is expected to give startups, enterprises and government organisations greater access to advanced cloud technologies, custom AI chips, managed AI services and developer tools, enabling them to build, deploy and scale AI applications more efficiently.

The announcement follows a meeting between Amazon President and CEO Andy Jassy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on June 25, where the two discussed India's growing digital economy and the company's long-term plans for the country.

During the meeting, Jassy reiterated Amazon's commitment to India's economic and technological growth. "For over a decade, we have been serving customers, sellers, developers, startups and enterprises through our different businesses. The response has been tremendous, with strong growth especially across our ecommerce, AI and cloud businesses," he said.

Jassy added that Amazon's expansion plans closely align with India's broader development priorities. "As we grow Amazon in India, our business priorities align with India's priorities of democratising access to AI, digitising small businesses, creating jobs and enabling exports. We are investing over $48 billion in the coming five years to meet the strong demand across our businesses and help India achieve these priorities. We are inspired by Prime Minister Modi's vision of a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat and remain committed to being a long-term partner in India's growth story," he said.

Beyond cloud infrastructure, Amazon plans to significantly expand its ecommerce and quick commerce network across the country. The company will open more than 20 new fulfilment centres and over 100 last-mile delivery stations this year, strengthening its logistics network and improving delivery speeds, particularly in Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities.

Amazon said its operations network already serves customers across every pin code in India and remains one of the company's largest global logistics ecosystems.

The company is also increasing investments in workforce welfare through its recently launched 'Sammaan' initiative, designed for delivery associates. The programme includes scholarships for employees' children, access to government welfare and financial inclusion schemes, comprehensive insurance coverage and road safety measures.

Part of Amazon India's previously announced $300 million investment towards operations and employee well-being will be used to expand these initiatives.

The latest announcement further cements India's position as one of Amazon's most important global markets. According to the company, its cumulative investments in India between 2010 and 2030 will now exceed $88 billion.

Over the past decade, Amazon says it has helped digitise 12 million small businesses, enabled more than $20 billion in cumulative ecommerce exports, trained over 10 million Indians in cloud skills and supported 2.8 million jobs across the country.

Looking ahead to 2030, the company has set ambitious targets that include supporting 3.8 million jobs, enabling $80 billion in cumulative ecommerce exports, extending AI-enabled services to 15 million small businesses, and providing AI education to four million government school students.

With global technology companies racing to expand AI infrastructure, Amazon's latest investment signals that India will remain central to its long-term strategy. The company is betting that rising enterprise adoption of AI, growing demand for cloud computing and rapid digitalisation across businesses and government will continue to drive the next phase of growth in one of the world's fastest-growing digital economies.
