Bengaluru has been ranked among Asia’s worst cities for traffic congestion, with drivers spending an average of 28 minutes and 10 seconds to cover just 10 kilometres, according to the TomTom Traffic Index 2023. This translates to residents of the Indian tech hub spending an additional 132 hours annually stuck in traffic during peak hours.
The findings underline Bengaluru's severe traffic woes, which are driven by rapid population growth and expanding urban infrastructure. Despite efforts to improve traffic management, the city's roads remain some of the slowest in Asia.
Following Bengaluru, Pune in western India ranks second for lengthy travel times at 27 minutes and 50 seconds per 10 km. Other cities, including Manila in the Philippines (27 minutes and 20 seconds) and Taichung in Taiwan (26 minutes and 50 seconds), also report similarly slow travel speeds.
The TomTom Traffic Index, which covers 387 cities across 55 countries and 6 continents, assesses cities based on average travel time, fuel costs, and CO2 emissions. It provides free, valuable information to help drivers, pedestrians, city planners, and policymakers address everyday traffic issues.
In a global comparison, London was the slowest city centre to navigate last year, with an average travel time of 37 minutes and 20 seconds per 10 km.
