Chennai has added another milestone to its growing industrial story. Mitsubishi Electric India has officially begun operations at its new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility at Origins by Mahindra, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s status as one of India’s most attractive manufacturing hubs.
The facility, developed by Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Limited, a joint venture between Mahindra World City Developers and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, marks a significant scale-up of Mitsubishi Electric India’s presence in the country.
A Rs. 2,100 crore investment signals long-term commitment
Spread across 52 acres within the integrated Origins by Mahindra industrial cluster, the new plant has been developed with an investment of approximately ₹2,100 crore. The facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin through a virtual plaque unveiling.
The scale of the investment underlines Mitsubishi Electric India’s long-term commitment to India and to Tamil Nadu in particular, which has steadily positioned itself as a preferred destination for high-value, technology-led manufacturing.
Boost to domestic manufacturing and Make in India
The new facility has an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 650,000 compressors. This expansion is expected to strengthen the regional supplier ecosystem and support local manufacturing of key components.
By producing both air conditioners and compressors domestically, Mitsubishi Electric India aims to respond more efficiently to rising demand, reduce dependence on imports, and improve quality control. The move also aligns closely with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which encourages global companies to manufacture locally and build resilient supply chains.
Chennai’s role as Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing backbone
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted Chennai’s central role in the state’s industrial growth. He said the city continues to serve as Tamil Nadu’s manufacturing backbone, supported by a deep and well-established industrial ecosystem.
The launch of Mitsubishi Electric India’s new facility, he noted, reflects the state’s growing potential and the government’s commitment to enabling both Indian and global businesses to expand operations and grow sustainably in Tamil Nadu.
Over the past few years, the state has attracted large investments across electronics, automobiles, engineering, and renewable energy, supported by policy stability, skilled manpower, and strong infrastructure.
Meeting India’s growing demand for energy-efficient cooling
India is witnessing rapid growth in demand for energy-efficient and high-quality air-conditioning solutions, driven by rising incomes, urbanisation, and climate conditions. Mitsubishi Electric India sees the new facility as a key enabler in meeting this demand.
Atsushi Takase, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India, said the plant will allow the company to respond faster to customer needs while ensuring high standards of quality and sustainability. He added that the facility positions India as a core hub within Mitsubishi Electric’s global air conditioning business.
The investment, he said, reflects confidence in the progressive industrial vision of the Tamil Nadu government and underscores the company’s long-term commitment to India’s manufacturing ambitions.
Strengthening the Origins by Mahindra ecosystem
For Mahindra Lifespaces, the expansion reinforces the strength of its integrated industrial cluster model. Vikram Goel, Chief Business Officer – Industrial at Mahindra Lifespaces Developers, said the continued expansion of global manufacturers like Mitsubishi Electric India demonstrates trust in the platform.
Origins by Mahindra focuses on building future-ready industrial ecosystems that combine world-class infrastructure, sustainability-led development, and seamless connectivity. The presence of large global players further strengthens the cluster’s appeal for other manufacturers looking to establish or expand operations in India.
Strategic location supports logistics and growth
Origins by Mahindra, Chennai enjoys a strategic location on National Highway 16 and falls within the influence zones of both the Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor and the Chennai–Visakhapatnam Industrial Corridor.
Its proximity to the ports of Chennai, Ennore, and Kattupalli enables efficient logistics and smoother supply chain operations, making it an attractive destination for export-oriented and manufacturing-led businesses.
As Mitsubishi Electric India ramps up production at its new facility, the expansion is expected to generate employment, deepen supplier networks, and further cement Chennai’s position as a key manufacturing hub in the global industrial landscape.
