With continued uncertainty surrounding the proposed Global City project in Ayyampuzha, the Kerala state government is preparing to take the initiative to move the stalled development forward. The delay in receiving final approval from the central government has prompted state authorities to explore alternative strategies to keep the project alive.
While the state government has not yet decided to proceed independently, authorities are seriously considering state-led implementation, potentially using their funding mechanisms if necessary.
The Global City project was initially conceived as a key component of the Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (KBIC), with Ayyampuzha identified as one of the two major nodes alongside Palakkad. Although the Palakkad node, focused on an Industrial Manufacturing Cluster (IMC), received Cabinet-level approval six months ago and has already seen over 105 acres of land transfer, progress in Ayyampuzha has hit a roadblock.
The central government has reportedly placed the Ayyampuzha proposal on hold, citing concerns that the development leans heavily towards residential and real estate use, which falls outside the scope of industrial initiatives defined under the KBIC framework.
Despite these challenges, the state government remains optimistic about salvaging the project. Preliminary approvals had been granted for both nodes during the initial planning stages, and detailed project reports were submitted for final clearance. With the Centre yet to respond decisively, the state is now weighing its next steps.
