Lucknow Set to Anchor Six Districts in SCR Expansion Plan

Lucknow is set for a major expansion with the launch of the State Capital Region (SCR) project, modeled on Delhi-NCR. A detailed 380-page report has been submitted by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) to the state government, proposing integrated development across six districts: Lucknow, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Barabanki, Hardoi, and Sitapur.

The SCR plan envisions a mix of residential, industrial, commercial, and green zones to strengthen the capital and ensure equitable growth in surrounding areas. Inspired by Delhi-NCR and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, the initiative seeks to position Lucknow among India’s leading urban centers.

A 40-page synopsis of the report is being prepared for release by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. A logo for the SCR is also being designed through a public competition, with citizen participation central to the project. LDA will invite suggestions via an online portal and physical drop boxes.

Officials emphasized the goal of shaping Lucknow into a global smart and green city, equipped with modern infrastructure, new employment opportunities, and improved quality of life. Key priorities outlined in the scheme include:

  • Expansion of the Metro network to adjoining districts
  • Widening of highways and ring roads
  • Affordable housing and slum redevelopment
  • Digital infrastructure and solar energy promotion
  • Establishment of industrial zones and SEZs
  • Creation of skill development and startup hubs
  • Smart transport systems including BRTS and electric buses
  • Enhanced water management and conservation of the Gomti river

The SCR project marks a transformative step in Uttar Pradesh’s urban planning strategy, aiming to unlock regional synergies and elevate Lucknow’s role as a future-ready capital.
