Navi Mumbai launches a year-long campaign to engage 2 lakh citizens, recycle plastic and e-waste, and turn waste into valuable community assets at 200+ locations.

Navi Mumbai Launches Campaign to Recycle Plastic and E-Waste

Navi Mumbai is taking a bold step towards becoming one of India’s most sustainable cities. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), in partnership with Project Mumbai and Mindspace Business Parks REIT, has launched the ‘Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon,’ a city-wide initiative designed to curb plastic and e-waste generation while promoting recycling and responsible waste management.

This year-long campaign will reach over 200 locations and engage nearly two lakh residents across Navi Mumbai. The goal is ambitious yet practical: to reduce waste, promote recycling, and turn discarded plastic and e-waste into useful community assets.

A Movement for Circular Living

The Recyclothon aims to make sustainability a way of life, not just a slogan. By involving housing societies, schools, corporates, and public institutions, it seeks to embed responsible waste management habits into the city’s daily routine. The project is based on the principles of the circular economy—a system where materials are reused, recycled, and given new life instead of being discarded in landfills.

Mindspace Business Parks REIT, the Sustainability Partner for this campaign, is bringing its corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts beyond its business campuses into the wider Navi Mumbai community. As one of the city’s largest developers, Mindspace REIT’s involvement bridges the gap between the corporate world and citizen action.

Dr. Kailash Shinde, Commissioner of NMMC, called the initiative a defining moment for the city. “The Recyclothon is more than a campaign—it’s a movement to make responsible waste management part of our city’s DNA. With active citizen participation and partnerships like Project Mumbai and Mindspace REIT, we’re building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient future for Navi Mumbai,” he said.

Turning Waste into Community Assets

One of the unique aspects of the Recyclothon is how it gives waste a new purpose. Plastic and e-waste collected during the campaign will be repurposed into everyday community amenities—benches, planters, walking tracks, and even school supplies. This not only reduces landfill waste but also demonstrates the power of the 3R principle: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

A special highlight of the campaign will be the creation of Zero Waste Gardens—public gardens designed with amenities made entirely from recycled plastic waste. These gardens will act as living examples of how sustainability and urban design can come together to create functional, eco-friendly spaces.

Collaboration Across the City

The Recyclothon is built on collaboration. NMMC and Project Mumbai will work closely with local housing societies, schools, corporates, and community groups to make the initiative a city-wide movement. Awareness campaigns, mangrove clean-up drives, and plastic collection events will be held regularly throughout the year to keep citizens engaged.

Employees from the two Mindspace Business Parks located in Airoli, along with local volunteers and student ambassadors, will participate in these activities. Their involvement will help spread awareness among both residents and businesses, ensuring the message of sustainability reaches every part of Navi Mumbai’s social and economic fabric.

Shishir Joshi, CEO and Co-Founder of Project Mumbai, said that the campaign demonstrates the impact of strong public-private collaboration. “Together with NMMC and Mindspace REIT, we’re turning waste into opportunity—converting discarded materials into useful community assets. This is sustainability as a people’s movement,” he said.

Building a Circular Future

India’s cities are growing fast, and with that comes the challenge of managing mounting plastic and electronic waste. The Recyclothon reflects a growing understanding that environmental sustainability cannot rely solely on policy—it requires participation from citizens, businesses, and civic bodies alike.

Ramesh Nair, CEO of Mindspace REIT, said that sustainability is at the core of the company’s philosophy. “At Mindspace REIT, sustainability isn’t a cost—it’s our competitive edge and the new currency of trust. Navi Mumbai is one of our most important markets, home to two major business parks and a thriving corporate ecosystem. Through this partnership, we want to make green the default choice, not the exception,” he explained.

He added that the Recyclothon embodies Mindspace REIT’s belief that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) responsibility is not a checklist, but a standard for how India should build its future—where collective action leads to measurable change.

A Model for Indian Cities

The Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon is designed not just as a local campaign but as a model that can be replicated across Indian cities. By combining community participation, corporate involvement, and municipal leadership, it creates a framework for sustainable urban living.

Navi Mumbai already enjoys a reputation for good civic planning and cleanliness. With this initiative, it is setting a new benchmark in how cities can tackle waste management and environmental sustainability through inclusion and innovation.

As the campaign progresses, the results—both tangible and cultural—are expected to ripple far beyond Navi Mumbai. With every recycled bench, every cleaned mangrove, and every Zero Waste Garden, the city is proving that sustainability is not just about managing waste, but about reimagining the way we live, build, and connect.

This Recyclothon isn’t simply about going plastic-free—it’s about building a future where every piece of waste finds a new purpose, and every citizen plays a role in shaping a cleaner, greener India.
