Prof. Christopher Benninger an internationally known architect, planner, teacher and an institution builder passed away after prolonged hospitalization due to cancer.
Aged 82, his demise occurred at 1.30am on Wednesday the 2nd of October 2024. Born in the US, he permanently migrated to India in 1971. Benninger contributed to the field sustainable planning in India. With A Master's in Architecture from Harvard and Masters in City Planning from MIT he's had been associated with CEPT University since 1968. He resigned his tenured professorship from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University to found the School of Planning in 1971 and thereafter he founded the Centre for Development Studies and Activities in Pune in 1976. He has been the recipient of coveted Great Master Architect Award in India and several other lifetime achievement awards.
His books, ‘Letters to A Young Architect’ has been reprinted 6 editions. His monograph ‘Christopher Benninger: Architecture for a Modern India’ has been published by Skira in Italy and Rizzoli in USA in 2016.
Prof. Christopher Benninger (23 November 1942 - 2 October 2024) will be remembered for his pioneering architectural works such as IIT Hyderabad; IIM Calcutta; Azim Premji University; CEPT University; Bajaj Institute of Technology, Suzlon One Earth Corporate office, among others.
