Tamil Nadu Plans Rs 100 Cr Marina-Kovalam Shoreline Facelift

According to a government order, the project envisages ecological activities such as preservation of flora and fauna, bio-fencing for sea-level rise and parks with salt-tolerant species.  It will also identify prominent nodes for developing as public spaces with distinct themes. Further, the SPV will focus on eliminating sewage discharge into the sea that may lead to accretion.

Principal Secretary of HUD department Hitesh Kumar S Makwana is the chairman of the SPV and it will have 17 members from departments including environment, corporation, CMDA, coastal zone management authority, TANU HDB and tourism.

“CMDA will prepare a plan to get a ‘blue beach’ tag for these beaches. The aim is to connect the eight beaches from Marina to Kovalam and develop eco-friendly structures with trails, cycling paths and livelihood activities for locals,” said Makwana.

Forest department additional chief secretary Supriya Sahu said it is a first-of-its-kind initiative for a coastal state and a much-needed measure. “This is a fantastic idea and since the coastal area is sensitive, the SPV will help in expediting environmental conservation,” she said.

Corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi said there is an urgent need to make the coastline litter free. “We are taking steps to eliminate plastic bags across the city, including beaches. GCC is working on better illumination and privatization of toilets at the beaches,” he said.
