The Karnataka government has decided to enhance the percentage of reservation for minorities under various housing schemes in the state from 10 to 15 per cent. The government reasoned that such a hike will benefit people from Jain, Christian and Muslim community.
Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan backed the proposal, which seeks to raise the reservation for minority communities from the current 10 per cent to 15 per cent. “Housing has been vacant, and we couldn’t allocate it to others. That’s why they requested 10–15 percent,” he said, pointing to towns like Mandya, where entire towers built under housing schemes are still empty. “Try Mandya, on the left side, there are 7–9 towers where no one has gone to live. At least minorities are willing to occupy those buildings,” he added.
The increase in quota in housing schemes follows the government’s proposal to extend quota benefits for Muslims in contract allocations, suggesting a broader push for increased community-specific welfare initiatives.
In a similar development in Uttar Prades, Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), during its 85th board meeting, approved an affordable housing scheme for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) near the upcoming Noida International Airport.
YEIDA CEO Arun Vir Singh said that the scheme aims to accommodate the increasing number of workers as the Noida International Airport and surrounding industrial projects begin operations.
As part of the plan, YEIDA will allocate 30,000 housing plots, each measuring 30 sq m, for EWS families with an annual income of under ?3 lakh. This initiative is designed to provide workers with housing options close to their workplace. In the first phase, 4,268 plots will be launched across Sectors 17, 18, and 20, the YEIDA statement said.
