A major relief for civilians living near naval installations across India has been that the defense ministry has reduced construction restrictions near the establishments to just 50 meters from 500 meters.
This allows to speed up the redevelopment and accelerate slum rehabilitation projects. The circular dated December 23, 2022, will now allow the redevelopment of hundreds of buildings in the eastern suburbs of Ghatkopar among other areas.
In October 2016 the MoD reduced the security barrier from 500m to just 10m for army installations across the country, including two depots in Kandivli and Malad. However as per the new circular Mumbai ordinance depot is one of the many across the country where the security barrier has been fixed at 50m.
With the new circular, construction curbs have been eased around naval installations like INS Trata in Worli, Colaba Military Station, and INS Hamla in Malad. Forward Support Base at Erangal in Malad, INS Tanaji at Mankhurd, and naval lands at Kalyan and Ambernath. The local military authority's NOC for construction will now be required only for projects within a 50m radius of the defence establishment.
