An awe-inspiring modernist home that rises seamlessly from a dense green mountainscape. Blending raw materiality with a sensitive response to site, the project exemplifies an “organic brutalist” ethos, harmoniously fusing architecture with nature.
Designing a mountain residence is a delicate balance between ambition and restraint – one that P S Design has displayed with nuance and intent. “You have to surrender to the terrain and build within nature, not on it,” say architect-designer duo Piyush and Priyanka Mehra. “This home is a pure expression of organic brutalism, designed to complement and coexist with its dramatic natural surroundings.”
The site, a steep hillside defined by two descending ridgelines forming a challenging V-shaped topography, dictated the building’s footprint. Embracing the contours rather than resisting them, the structure appears to grow out of the earth – its sculptural, geometric form a striking counterpoint to the lush foliage. A minimalist cement plaster finish on the exterior creates a calm, monolithic presence, allowing the home to sit in quiet dialogue with the landscape. Organized across three levels spread over 20,000-sqft space, the residence is both spatially rich and visually porous. The entry point is on the middle floor, aligned with the first ridge, and hosts the main foyer and common living areas.
Below it, the structure splits into two wings on the lower ridge: one accommodating guest suites and staff quarters, while the other wing extends up to the entrance floor that houses lounges, kitchens, services and a dramatic semi-outdoor heated pool with an expansive deck that opens to panoramic valley views. The topmost level, reserved for private bedrooms, features intimate terraces offering immersive views of the surrounding forested hills. With each floor jutting out at considered angles and framing distinct vistas, the home offers a living experience deeply embedded in the landscape. It’s a contemporary mountain retreat where architecture and nature exist not in contrast, but in quiet conversation.
