Interest in buying homes in Finland has surged by 20 per cent compared to last year, according to data. This increase follows a steady rise in property transactions throughout 2023, despite ongoing economic uncertainty. Detached houses have become the most sought-after property type nationwide.
In Helsinki, buyers are increasingly focused on vacation homes rather than apartments, while in Tampere and Turku, apartments are the preferred choice. According to the report, this shift in demand is attributed to two opposing factors: lower property prices and growing interest.
The report explained that housing prices remain attractive, encouraging buyers, but the overall economic situation still limits transaction volumes. Oikotie, Finland’s leading real estate platform, attracts over a million users weekly, and its data shows that detached houses are the most searched property type across the country, followed by standalone houses and vacation homes. Apartments rank fourth, indicating a change in buyer preferences towards more spacious properties.
In the Helsinki region, detached houses are the most sought-after, with vacation homes becoming increasingly popular. In Tampere and Turku, however, apartments remain the top choice.
Despite this growing interest, housing affordability remains a key issue. Although interest rates and inflation have stabilised after rising in 2022 and 2023, economic uncertainty and employment concerns continue to pose challenges, particularly for those unable to enter the housing market.
