Kuwait is set to invest 243 million Kuwaiti dinars (£790 million) in developing a medical city dedicated to retirees. Spearheaded by the Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS), the project aims to enhance healthcare services for the country's ageing population, integrating international medical standards while increasing private sector involvement.
The Kuwait Medical City will be situated in Amghara, spanning 860,000 square metres. Designed to be a comprehensive healthcare hub, it will provide advanced medical treatment, long-term care, and rehabilitation services. The city will feature a 400-bed hospital, with plans for expansion to 800 beds, alongside five specialised centres focusing on cardiac and respiratory care, digestive disorders, urology and nephrology, and orthopaedic treatments.
The development will also include outpatient clinics, long-term care facilities, and rehabilitation services, as well as residential, commercial, and recreational areas complemented by green spaces. The project aims to reduce Kuwait's reliance on overseas medical treatment and strengthen the local healthcare sector by supporting research and training programmes.
Progress on the medical city is well underway, with key milestones already achieved, including completing a 132 KV power station. Infrastructure design has also been finalised, and contractor bids are currently being reviewed. The hospital's design and medical equipment selection will be finalised by 2026, with construction set to begin in 2027. The project is slated for completion by the end of 2030.
In the 2025-2026 fiscal year, 50 million dinars will be allocated to cover ongoing development costs, with plans to create jobs and provide training opportunities for Kuwaiti medical professionals.
