Airports are often the first impression a traveller gets of a destination, and many of them are thus designed to leave a lasting impact. They are no longer just places to catch flights—some of the airports, around the globe, are architectural marvels.
Six airports made it to the list of world's most beautiful airports, which was curated by a jury featuring some of the most renowned architects globally. Unfortunately, no Indian airport was included this year.
Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 2, which underwent a major expansion late last year, and Thailand's Suvarnabhumi Airport, the main international airport serving Bangkok, are the two Asian airports featured among other airports on Prix Versailles' list of world's most beautiful airports. They took up the third and fourth positions on the list, respectively.
Changi Airport is much more than just an airfield; it is a destination in itself. Under its iconic glass-and-steel dome is a blend of marvelous architecture, nature and several luxury amenities. Highlights include the world’s largest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex, which cascades through the heart of the terminal, and the Shiseido Forest Valley, a lush five-story indoor garden. The Canopy Park, which is on the topmost level of the Changi Airport, is another standout. You'll find themed gardens, play areas, and even a sky bridge at The Canopy Park.
The airport is also home to as many as 300 retail and dining outlets and a luxurious hotel. It's no surprise that this airport is consistently hailed as one of the world's finest.
Speaking of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, its most striking feature is the innovative roof, which is designed in a wave-like form. It appears to float, symbolizing the transformation of the site, which was once waterlogged land. Suvarnabhumi International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia.
Topping the list of world’s most beautiful airports is Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport. The other airports featured include Felipe Ángeles International Airport in Zumpango at second place, Logan International Airport's Terminal E in Boston at fifth, and Kansas City International Airport in sixth place.
