Andhra Pradesh Launches India’s Biggest Energy-efficiency Project in Its Housing Scheme

The Andhra Pradesh government has formulated India’s biggest energy efficiency project in its housing scheme – Navaratnalu Pedalandariki Illu-Jagananna Colonies. The state government will supply cost-effective energy efficient appliances (four LED bulbs, two LED tube Lights and two energy efficient fans) to each beneficiary of the housing scheme.

The state government is constructing 15.6 lakh houses in phase one of the Jagananna Colonies programme. These appliances are expected to save 734 units of electricity per house per annum. The energy savings would be worth of 350 crore for all the 15.6 lakh houses combined.

Special chief secretary (housing), Ajay Jain, said that for the first time in India, the AP government has taken an initiative to facilitate best quality energy efficient appliances at highly cost-effective prices. “Apart from the savings on the energy and electricity bills, this would improve the quality of life of the occupants of these 15.6 lakh houses,” said Ajay Jain.

The state housing department has proposed to take up the procurement of energy efficient appliances with the support of Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation (APSEEDCO) through Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture company of four Central public sector undertakings.

The EESL demonstrated energy efficient appliances such as LED bulb, LED tube light and BLDC energy efficient fan to chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy during a review meeting a few days ago. The chief minister suggested to the EESL that there should be no compromise in the quality of products and directed the housing department to finalise the modalities for supply of appliances.

In view of this, the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation Ltd has approached the EESL for which the latter agreed to supply these appliances at 30 to 35 per cent cheaper than the market prices. State housing minister Jogi Ramesh said that Andhra Pradesh will set an example to the entire country by constructing YSR Jagananna colonies by providing best social infrastructure.

“This infra will include secretariats, health centres, schools, colleges, libraries, shopping complexes, parks, community halls, banks, stadiums, religious buildings, dumping yards, burial grounds, etc. The state government is spending 4,128 crore on water supply, 7,989 crore for electricity and internet, 10,251 crore on laying CC roads, 7,337 crore on construction of drains, etc. in Jagananna Colonies. In all, about 34,309 crore will be spent on providing the best infrastructure to the houses under phase-1 and phase-2,” said Ramesh.
