Ayodhya is going through one of the most dramatic urban transformations in recent memory. What was once a quiet temple town is now being reshaped into a modern, future-ready city powered by clean energy, smart infrastructure, and thoughtful urban planning. This rapid makeover comes as the city prepares for major cultural events and rising global attention, especially with the upcoming flag hoisting ceremony at the Ram Temple on November 25.
At the center of this transformation is a vision that merges Ayodhya’s deep spiritual heritage with the tools of a modern smart city. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Ayodhya has been pushed toward becoming a model for sustainable, technology-driven development. One of the biggest goals is turning Ayodhya into a “Solar City,” a place that leans heavily on renewable energy to meet its daily needs.
A major part of this shift is the adoption of solar power across the city. Ayodhya has already been declared a Model Solar City under the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy 2022. The most prominent project is a 40 MW solar plant developed by NTPC Green Energy Limited across 165 hectares near the Saryu River. This single plant now meets nearly 25 to 30 percent of Ayodhya’s power demand, which stands at 198 MW. It marks a big step toward energy independence and shows how renewable power can support a growing urban center without placing extra pressure on the grid.
The move toward sustainability doesn’t end with electricity. Ayodhya is also focusing on greener urban spaces. Under the Green Fund initiative, the Ayodhya Development Authority is planting 15,000 trees across 75 locations using the Miyawaki method, known for creating dense, fast-growing urban forests. These green patches will help balance the effects of rapid development and improve air quality.
The city is also expanding its electric mobility network. With the help of Tata Power, Reliance, and the Adani Group, EV charging stations are being set up at 13 public locations. Ten of these stations are already fully operational, and the remaining ones will be rolled out soon. The aim is to make eco-friendly transport convenient for both residents and the growing number of visitors.
Alongside sustainability, security has become a major priority. A wide network of CCTV cameras is being installed across Ayodhya under a framework called the “Chakravyuh for Security.” This will allow round-the-clock monitoring, making the city safer for residents, pilgrims, and tourists. With more events and religious tourism expected, this layer of surveillance is essential for crowd management and public safety.
Urban development is also taking place through the Greenfield Township model, which is reshaping Ayodhya’s modern identity. Under the “Navya Ayodhya” scheme, a 550-acre high-tech township is being built with an investment of ?218 crore. The project includes underground drainage, electricity ducts, a 200-acre green zone, a super-specialty medical center, and a wellness hub. By combining infrastructure with health, open spaces, and community facilities, the township aims to give Ayodhya a balanced and sustainable urban environment.
This entire transformation is guided by the Ayodhya Master Plan 2031, which lays out how the city will grow over the next decade. The plan focuses on improving housing, transport, cultural landmarks, tourism infrastructure, and public spaces. Notably, Ayodhya now ranks first among Uttar Pradesh’s 17 smart cities, showing how quickly it has moved up the ladder.
Ayodhya’s transformation is not just about new buildings or roads. It represents a larger effort to build a city that honors its spiritual legacy while embracing progress. With clean energy, strong connectivity, modern safety systems, and eco-friendly design, Ayodhya is emerging as a model for how heritage cities can evolve without losing their identity.
The result is a city prepared for the future, yet deeply connected to its past—a combination that will shape Ayodhya’s place on the global map in the years ahead.
