The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has made a significant move by starting demolishing process of a 50-year-old illegal bakery operating (Since 1974) on a BMC plot in Byculla. Despite being provided with permanent place in Goregaon by BMC, the bakery continued to use both premises and legally challenged the BMC’s eviction notice.
However, the court ruled in favor of the BMC, allowing the demolition to proceed. The reclaiming area spans 3,400 sq. mtr and includes 117 tenants. The illegal bakery was occupying 500 sq. mtr of this area and was attempting to stall the redevelopment process. The demolition was carried out under the vigilant supervision of 25 BMC officials, with the support of 20 police officers to ensure the operation proceeded without incident.
The Letter of Intent (LOI) from the BMC for redevelopment project has been awarded to HI ROCK CONSTRUCTION PVT LTD [Kinjal Group, Mumbai], which has obtained the letter of intent for the redevelopment. Within three months, the redevelopment will commence, featuring a 22-floor rehabilitation wing and a 35-floor wing for sale. Additionally, a new playground will be constructed and handed over to the BMC, providing much-needed recreational space for the community.
There are numerous BMC plots across Mumbai occupied illegally, preventing their optimal use for public benefit. This case sets a precedent, demonstrating the BMC's renewed efforts to reclaim illegal occupancy and develop it for the public good.
