Nashik is gearing up for the 2026–2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela with an ambitious Rs. 1,000 crore investment aimed at expanding Sadhugram, the temporary settlement for sadhus. The Kumbh Mela Authority has approved Rs. 3,200 crore for the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), with Rs. 1,050 crore allocated for acquiring an additional 250 acres in Tapovan to accommodate the influx of sadhus. This expansion is crucial to meet the needs of the estimated 5 to 10 lakh sadhus expected to attend the event.
Land Acquisition Plans
Currently, NMC owns 100 acres in Tapovan designated as a no-development zone for Sadhugram. The proposal seeks to acquire the remaining 250 acres permanently to create a larger and more organized settlement. However, the compensation model for land acquisition remains under discussion. Earlier, NMC proposed a ?2,300 crore budget for land acquisition, suggesting options like a 50% cash payout and 50% Transfer of Development Rights (TDR), or providing alternative land parcels. Principal Secretary Ashwini Bhide has directed the civic body to revisit these models and present a revised plan.
Infrastructure Development
In addition to land acquisition, NMC is undertaking significant infrastructure projects to support the Kumbh Mela. A Rs. 15,000 crore comprehensive plan has been submitted to the state government, with Rs. 3,200 crore already approved for initial works. These projects include road improvements, water supply systems, and sanitation facilities. An upgraded quality control laboratory has been inaugurated to ensure the quality of construction materials. Furthermore, 17,000 mobile toilets are planned to be deployed during the event to accommodate the massive influx of devotees.
Economic and Social Impact
The expansion of Sadhugram and associated infrastructure projects are expected to have a significant economic impact on Nashik. The development will create employment opportunities, boost local businesses, and enhance the city's infrastructure. Moreover, the Kumbh Mela is anticipated to attract millions of pilgrims, leading to increased tourism and associated revenues. The establishment of Sadhugram as a permanent facility will also provide a dedicated space for sadhus during future religious events, promoting spiritual tourism in the region.
Nashik's preparations for the 2026–2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela reflect a strategic approach to urban planning and development. The proposed expansion of Sadhugram and the associated infrastructure projects aim to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims and ensure the success of the event. As the plans move forward, the collaboration between the Kumbh Mela Authority, NMC, and the state government will be crucial in realizing these ambitious goals.
