Navi Mumbai has become the first municipal corporation in India to issue Property Identity Cards to citizens; a move aimed at enhancing transparency and convenience in property management. Launched by Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde, the initiative will benefit over 3.5 lakh property owners by consolidating key details—property number, address, area, and tax status—into a single smart card.
The card functions like a PAN or Aadhaar for property, enabling holders to check tax arrears, view advance tax amounts, and make payments at civic utility centres. A QR code embedded on the card also facilitates online payments, streamlining interactions with the Property Tax Department and reducing the need for in-person visits.
At a recent launch event, Shinde distributed the first batch of cards to five property owners. He emphasized that the initiative would save time and effort for citizens, especially in property sale and transfer processes. The move aligns with Navi Mumbai’s push for digitalisation, catering to its tech-savvy and educated population.
To prepare the cards, NMMC conducted a city-wide survey to verify property ownership. Self-help groups were engaged for door-to-door data collection and also assisted in distributing property tax bills. The verified data formed the basis for issuing the identity cards.
