Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has bagged a significant contract from the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) to construct 156 route kilometres (RKM) of ballastless track for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. The project, classified as a ‘large’ order valued between Rs2,500–Rs5,000 crore, covers the stretch between Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Zaroli village in Gujarat, designated as Package T1.
The scope includes design, supply, construction, testing, and commissioning on a design-build lump sum basis. Of the 156 RKM, over 21 km will be underground and 135 km will be built on elevated viaducts. This marks L&T’s second major track-work order for the corridor, following its 2022 win for Package T3, which spans 116 km from south of Vadodara to Sabarmati depot.
With this latest win, L&T now holds responsibility for more than half of the total track works on the 508 km corridor. The company will deploy Japanese Shinkansen J Slab Track technology, enabling train speeds of up to 320 km/h and promising longer service life, smoother rides, and simplified maintenance.
“Our success in the T3 package involved rapid technology absorption, indigenisation of plant & machinery, and value engineering. This approach will guide our execution of the new order,” said SV Desai, Whole-Time Director and Senior EVP (Civil Infrastructure), L&T.
L&T’s track record includes ballastless systems for metro networks in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai, as well as international projects in Jakarta. As of now, NHSRCL reports that 320 km of viaduct has been completed, alongside 17 river bridges, nine steel bridges, five concrete bridges, and 202 km of track bed.
