The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated a Rs. 2,200 crore tender for the construction of two significant infrastructure projects in Malad, Mumbai. These developments aim to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region and is slated for completion by 2028.
One of the key projects is a cable-stayed vehicular bridge from Lagoon Road to Infiniti Mall. Estimated to cost over Rs. 1,700 crore, this 380-meter-long and 36-meter-wide bridge is expected to connect Malad West to Malvani, addressing long-standing traffic issues in the area.
The second project involves an elevated road over the Ramchandra nullah, connecting MDP Road to Ryan International School. This Rs. 400 crore initiative will link the backside of Evershine Nagar up to Atharva College, facilitating smoother transit for residents and students.
The distance between Andheri and Malad is approximately 12 km, but these areas lack direct connectivity. Motorists currently rely on Link Road, SV Road, or the Western Express Highway, leading to congestion. To address this, a vehicular bridge was proposed from Lagoon Road in Andheri West to Infinity Mall in Malad West. Initially conceived in the BMC’s Development Plan 2034, the project gained momentum in 2021.
According to officials, the bridge will be 400 metres long and 35 metres wide, featuring two lanes on each side to accommodate increased traffic flow. The bridge will begin behind Infinity Mall and extend toward Andheri Back Road, passing over one hectare of mangrove patches and the Poisar River.
Additionally, the project includes a new traffic arm connecting Charkop Junction to Ryan International School and the widening of Malad-Marve Road by 3.65 meters from Mahakali Nagar Junction to Mith Chowky near Giridhar Park.
Environmental considerations have been addressed, with approximately 200 mangroves affected by the project. The BMC has obtained approval from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authorities to proceed with the developments.
Union Minister and North Mumbai MP Piyush Goyal has been instrumental in advancing these projects, emphasizing their importance in managing traffic in the Mith Chowky and Evershine Nagar areas, especially in light of the second phase of the coastal road project.
