REC Approves Rs. 7,500 Crore for Brookfield’s 1,040 MW Green Project

REC has approved Rs. 7,500 crore funding for Brookfield’s 1,040 MW hybrid renewable project in Kurnool, marking its biggest-ever financial support for a private clean energy venture.

REC Approves Rs. 7,500 Crore for Brookfield’s 1,040 MW Green Project

Andhra Pradesh is fast emerging as one of India’s most dynamic renewable energy destinations. In a significant boost to the state’s green ambitions, global investor Brookfield has secured Rs. 7,500 crore in funding from the State-owned non-banking financial company (NBFC), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC Ltd) to develop a massive 1,040 MW hybrid renewable energy project in Kurnool.

"REC has sanctioned a record Rs. 7,500 crore funding for Brookfield’s 1,040 MW hybrid renewable energy project at Kurnool, comprising 640 MW of wind and 400 MW of solar capacity," the government’s statement said.

The project, combining both wind and solar energy, is being described as one of the largest private renewable initiatives in India. It will be executed through Evren, a joint venture formed by Brookfield and Hyderabad-based Axis Energy. Together, they plan to establish an integrated clean energy ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh, expanding further into Anantapur and other districts.

Evren, a clean energy platform launched by Brookfield in India as a joint venture with Axis Energy, is developing a hybrid project of 1.04 gigawatt (Gw) at Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh at an investment of Rs. 9,910 crore. Of this, REC will be providing Rs. 7,500 crore.

Evren has already lined up over 3 GW of renewable power projects across Kurnool and Anantapur, as part of Brookfield’s broader 8,000 MW pipeline in Andhra Pradesh involving a total investment of Rs. 50,000 crore.

A New Chapter in Andhra Pradesh’s Green Story

The announcement comes shortly after Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh met Brookfield Global President Connor Teskey in London to discuss renewable energy partnerships and data center collaborations. The meeting appears to have laid the groundwork for this major investment, reinforcing Andhra Pradesh’s growing appeal to global energy players.

Brookfield, one of the world’s largest infrastructure and renewable energy investors, has been steadily expanding its presence in India. The company already manages large-scale clean energy assets across the country and is now deepening its focus on hybrid models, projects that blend multiple renewable sources like solar and wind, supported by advanced battery storage.

Power That Doesn’t Depend on the Weather

What makes the Kurnool project stand out is its hybrid nature. By combining wind, solar, and battery storage, the plant will ensure uninterrupted power generation, even when the weather fluctuates. This is crucial in a country like India, where renewable energy output can often vary dramatically between seasons or even within a single day.

Experts believe such hybrid projects represent the next stage of India’s clean energy transition. “The integration of wind, solar, and storage will help maintain grid stability and reduce power fluctuations,” says an energy analyst. “It’s a model that other states are likely to follow.”

For Andhra Pradesh, the project also offers practical benefits, a more reliable electricity supply, better load management, and reduced dependency on fossil fuels.

Economic and Employment Impact

Beyond its environmental value, the project is expected to have a strong economic ripple effect. Thousands of direct and indirect jobs will be created during the construction and operational phases. Local industries, from logistics and manufacturing to maintenance and construction are also likely to benefit from the surge in clean energy activity.

Minister Nara Lokesh has described the Brookfield partnership as a milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s renewable journey. “The state is quickly transforming into India’s renewable energy hub,” he said, emphasizing how such projects not only reduce emissions but also attract global investors and strengthen the local economy.

The Sunrise State Shines Again

Andhra Pradesh, often called the Sunrise State, has long prided itself on its progressive approach to industrial development. With abundant land availability, high solar irradiance, and favourable wind corridors, the state offers ideal conditions for large-scale renewable projects.

Over the past decade, it has drawn significant investment from global players in solar, wind, and now hybrid energy. The Brookfield-REC partnership further cements Andhra Pradesh’s reputation as a leader in the clean energy transition, one that aligns with India’s national target of achieving 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.

As the Kurnool project takes shape, it will not only power homes and industries but also signal a larger transformation in how India generates, distributes, and sustains energy. Andhra Pradesh, once known for its agricultural and IT sectors, is now adding a new feather to its cap, as the heart of India’s renewable revolution.
