For Lata Pillai, leadership has never been about measuring success against barriers or viewing challenges through the lens of gender. Instead, she believes obstacles are a natural part of every professional journey, shaping resilience, character and perspective. Throughout her career, she has chosen to focus not on the limitations others might perceive, but on the strengths she brings to the table. For her, being a woman has never been a disadvantage. It has been one of the qualities that has helped define her leadership style.
“Success thrives on challenges, and I have always seen challenges as gender neutral. Being a woman has been one of my greatest strengths because it has given me empathy, patience, deep listening skills and the ability to truly hear what is being said beyond the words,” she says.
Those qualities, she believes, have proved invaluable while leading teams, navigating change and making difficult decisions. Listening with intent has enabled her to build trust, strengthen relationships and uncover insights that may otherwise have gone unnoticed. Rather than asking whether gender created more obstacles, she prefers to focus on how emotional intelligence, collaboration and empathy have consistently helped her build stronger teams and better outcomes. Every challenge, she says, has simply reinforced that growth comes from pushing boundaries rather than remaining within familiar limits. While conversations around women in leadership have evolved significantly, Lata believes the reality is more layered than it often appears. Women continue to balance demanding professional responsibilities alongside their roles as mothers, daughters and caregivers, often carrying expectations that extend well beyond the workplace.
“The world has evolved considerably. Trust in women’s leadership has grown stronger with every generation, and that momentum will only continue as more women step into decision-making roles,” she says.
She believes technology integration and PropTech adoption will move from optional to essential over the next decade. AI-driven property management, virtual site visits, blockchain, predictive analytics, IoT-enabled smart buildings and digital twins will reshape the industry, while sustainability, green-certified buildings, energy-efficient design and circular economy principles will become business imperatives, transforming how spaces are developed, transacted and experienced across India. Among the many people who have influenced her life, Lata draws lasting inspiration from her mother, whose resilience and values became the foundation of her journey. She also admires women leaders including Renuka Ramnath, Kalpana Morparia, Shikha Sharma, Vishakha Mulye, Lalita D. Gupte, Chanda Kochhar and JLL CEO Radha Dhir, each of whom exemplifies a different dimension of leadership.
