Pooja Bihani Soulful Approach To Architecture

“Design is a silent dialogue between people and space,” says Pooja Bihani, Founder of Spaces & Design, as she reflects on the studio’s soulful approach to architecture.

Pooja Bihani Soulful Approach To Architecture

At Spaces & Design, our philosophy is rooted in the belief that architecture is not just about structures—it is about stories. Every space speaks, and our role as designers is to listen, interpret, and shape that narrative into a built form that is emotionally resonant, contextually aware, and experientially rich.

Over the years, we have consciously resisted the idea of a rigid signature style. Instead, our work evolves from the site, the user, and the emotion we seek to evoke. Whether it’s a residence, a boutique hotel, or a cultural installation, each project emerges from its own unique set of influences. If there is a unifying thread, it is our commitment to material honesty, artisanal craft, and spatial clarity. We believe in layering light, texture, and local references to create environments that are immersive and tactile—spaces that are not only beautiful but meaningful.

Functionality and aesthetics in our projects are never seen as conflicting goals. We see design as a pursuit of balance. From the layout of a home that supports multi-generational living, to a hotel that offers sensory comfort at every corner, our aim is to create spaces that flow naturally, age gracefully, and invite daily rituals. For us, a successful space isn’t one that dazzles at first glance—it’s one that continues to reveal itself, day after day.

Sustainability is not a checkbox—it’s embedded in our ethos. We practice what I call “material mindfulness”—consciously choosing materials and methods that are local, repurposed, or low-impact. In our recent installation for Design POV, we drew inspiration from Bengal’s rich textile heritage. We used Jamdani and Khadi not just as fabrics, but as architectural expressions—woven into partitions, upholstery, and wall treatments. This idea of “Woven Air” was both poetic and practical, showing how sustainability can be emotionally evocative and materially innovative.

Clients today are evolving, and so are their expectations. The brief is no longer limited to aesthetics or luxury. It’s about emotion, identity, and well-being. People want homes that reflect who they are—spaces that support introspection, connection, and wellness. In our practice, this has led us to become more research-led, more empathetic, and far more attuned to the daily rhythms and cultural nuances of living. From designing intuitive work-from-home corners to creating personal sanctuaries for reflection and rest, we now design spaces that are deeply personal and emotionally intelligent.

The Indian context, with its depth of craft, culture, and community, is our greatest muse. Whether it’s the warmth of handwoven textiles, the grandeur of temple columns, or the timeless appeal of a courtyard, we constantly draw from this well of inspiration. But we are not looking to replicate tradition—we aim to abstract its essence into forms that feel relevant today. Our goal is to celebrate India’s design identity on the global stage—not through mimicry, but through mindful innovation.

Craft, in our work, is not just a heritage element—it’s a living, evolving language. In our Design POV suite, we reinterpreted Indian textile crafts like Gamucha, Batik, and Kantha into modern furniture silhouettes and architectural gestures. These interventions carry the stories of artisans while responding to the needs of contemporary living. We believe this is how craft can move forward—by being functional, poetic, and integrated into everyday design.

Finally, the role of materials and immersive experiences in design is expanding. Materials today are not just about durability—they’re about storytelling. We ask: How does it feel underfoot? How does it catch the morning light? How does it influence your state of mind? We are now working with interactive textures, ambient lighting, and even scent to create multi-sensory spaces that are not just seen—but felt.

As we look ahead, I believe Indian design will rise globally through authenticity, empathy, and innovation. The question is no longer what we build—but why we build it. And at Spaces & Design, that “why” continues to guide every line we draw and every story we tell.
