Over the past few decades, metro rail systems have reshaped intracity mobility, encouraging a strong shift toward public transport. Yet, a persistent gap has remained in fast, comfortable, and reliable regional or intercity connectivity. With a design speed of 180 kmph, Namo Bharat has been conceived to bridge this gap, offering seamless travel across distances up to 250 km.
A consistent feature of India’s urbanization has been the infrastructure imbalance between metropolitan regions and tier-2 cities, often compelling migration to already congested metros. Namo Bharat addresses this by enabling people to live and work across regions, with improved access to employment, education, healthcare, and housing. By integrating stations with existing transport hubs and adopting innovative construction practices such as pre-casting and digital monitoring tools like SPEED, NCRTC has ensured timely delivery while maintaining safety and reliability.
Shalabh Goel, Managing Director, NCRTC, highlighted: “Commuter-centricity has been the tenet of this project since inception. Seamless connectivity and convenience demanded technical rigour, but through careful planning and perseverance, the team achieved it. Namo Bharat is not just about faster travel—it is about enhancing quality of life.”
For Goel, one of the most fulfilling aspects of leading NCRTC has been witnessing how faster, more reliable travel is helping commuters save time, access opportunities more easily, and plan their lives with greater confidence. He emphasized the pride in steering a project that will benefit millions for decades, while working with a team eager to innovate and embrace global best practices.
On policy reforms, Goel noted India’s strong thrust on public transport in the past decade, supported by improved coordination and funding continuity. The growing focus on regional connectivity and green, energy-efficient transit systems reflects a forward-looking approach linking mobility with economic growth, sustainability, and quality of life.
As discussions continue on expanding the Namo Bharat network, the project stands as a defining milestone in India’s transit evolution, promising speed, reliability, and long-term impact for commuters across the country.
