Presenting the Union Budget for 2025 Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman listed measures to expand affordable housing. She announced that 40,000 units of housing would be completed in 2025-26 to help families which have taken loans to buy apartments, while also paying rents for other dwellings since the apartments were not yet ready. This will form part of the Special Window for Affordable and Mid-income housing scheme (SWAMIH).
The Union government has proposed allocating ?15,000 crore for the much-awaited second tranche of the Special Window for Affordable and Mid-Income Housing (SWAMIH) fund, which will have a particular focus on completing stuck housing projects.
The SWAMIH Fund 2 will be established as a blended finance facility with contribution from the government, banks, and private investors, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday in her Union Budget for 2025-26. The fund will aim at expeditious completion of 100,000 housing units.
“Under SWAMIH, 50,000 dwelling units in stressed housing projects have been completed, and keys handed over to home buyers. Another 40,000 units will be completed in 2025, further helping middle-class families who were paying EMIs on loans taken for apartments, while also paying rent for their current dwellings,” Sitharaman said in her Budget speech.
