Govt Role In Housing Has Changed From Provider To Facilitator

What are the main highlights of Maharashtra's draft housing policy?

To address the challenge of Housing for All and achieve the goal of a Slum-Free Maharashtra the new Housing Policy focuses on the EWS, LIG, and MIG segments of the population. The policy will emphasise on housing for senior citizens, women, children. Another major aspect of the policy is to go green by adopting sustainability.  We have invited suggestions and our team will review it and consider them as per the requirements. The policy will be a game changer for the housing sector of Maharashtra state for the years to come.

How will Maharashtra's new housing policy make urban housing affordable?

Government's role in affordable housing has evolved from provider to facilitator, focusing on EWS/LIG segments through subsidies and incentives. Public authorities prioritize EWS/LIG housing, while encouraging private sector development for MIG/HIG affordable housing options. There are several policy measures which will be prioritised by the department to make urban housing affordable.

What steps are being taken to address the challenges in slum redevelopment projects?

The first challenge that any such project faces is the finance part which the housing ministry is trying to simplify through various measures. The issue of eligible and non-eligible is also being addressed and no one is left out in such projects. We are adopting an equal approach for all under the theme of ‘housing for all’.

When will Maharashtra achieve 'Housing for All?

The need for housing will keep increasing with the overall development of Maharashtra as a state. The housing ministry is striving their best to meet the increasing needs. The aim is to ensure that every citizen of Maharashtra has access to their own home, whether through MHADA or SRA developments or other means. The plan is to have additional stock to meet the requirement.
