Real estate being one of the most talked sectors when it comes to sustainability, is coming forward with initiatives and measures to ensure there is a sustainable approach. This World Environment Day marked on June 5, realty leaders share their initiatives and ideas of such eco-friendly practices.
Sharing about the initiatives Kalyan Chakrabarti, CEO, Emaar India “At Emaar India, we recognise the urgency of creating environment-friendly construction designs and bio-climatic spaces. We stand committed, to reciprocate, to nurture and safeguard our environment, which is why sustainability is inherently embedded in our system right from planning to the operational phase of the project. Our projects demonstrate unique concepts of site selection, sustainable architecture & design, building material, equipment selection, water conservation, waste reduction, energy efficiency, biodiversity, and emission reduction, thereby contributing positively towards Climate Change. By promoting innovative solutions and responsible business practices, we strive to chart a course towards a future where the environment is protected at every step of the way, and magic is preserved for generations to come.”
Sanjay Joshi, Chief Projects and Manufacturing Officer, Nuvoco Vistas Corp. Ltd, “At Nuvoco, sustainability isn't just a goal; it's our guiding principle. Our relentless pursuit of sustainability in every aspect of our business reflects our dedication to creating a greener, more resilient world. This commitment is embedded in our Protect Our Planet agenda, which encompasses five key dimensions: Decarbonization, Water Management, Circular Economy, Biodiversity, and Waste Reduction.”
“We have made significant strides in our sustainability initiatives, such as increasing the use of alternative fuels, banning single-use plastics, and promoting the use of cement bags made from recycled polypropylene. Additionally, we have modified all our plants to reduce Specific Heat Consumption (SHC) and Specific Power Consumption (SPC) in clinker and cement manufacturing. Our efforts extend to improving resource efficiency and minimizing environmental impact through green logistics and the implementation of Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS).
Our commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 2% annually and adopting the 5R concept for water management further exemplifies our dedication towards sustainability. In FY24, we achieved a ~2% reduction in carbon emissions and increased our solar power capacity to 5.3 MW, reaffirming our leadership in sustainability within the industry.” He added.
Satyendra Prasad Narala - Managing Director, Regency Ceramics said, “Adopting cool roof tiles is a simple yet powerful step towards sustainable living. By naturally insulating homes and reducing the reliance on heating and cooling systems, they contribute enormously to energy efficiency. Reduction of the “urban heat island effect” impacts heat stress levels positively. The construction sector bears a significant responsibility in creating sustainable alternatives, and the adoption of cool roof tiles is a prime example of this commitment. The sector must prioritize environmentally conscious practices. Fostering a built environment that supports and sustains our planet should be the solemn promise to our future generations.”
Further, in a significant step towards environmental sustainability, Elan Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Elan Group, has pledged to cultivate more than 25,000 plants and trees in Gurugram on the occasion of World Environment Day. This initiative aims to contribute to the reforestation of the city and promote ecological balance.
A diverse selection of plants and trees is being planted at various locations across Gurugram. The entire plantation drive is set to be completed within the month of June 2024, demonstrating Elan Foundation's commitment to efficient environmental action. This initiative aligns perfectly with the theme of World Environment Day 2024: ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,’ underscoring the importance of combating land degradation and promoting sustainable land management practices.
Commenting on the initiative, Akash Kapoor, Director, Elan Group said, “With our ambitious pledge to cultivate more than 25,000 plants and trees on World Environment Day, we are embodying the ethos of responsibility and action. Each sapling planted represents a promise to nurture, protect, and sustain our precious environment. Our effort to strengthen green cover underscores our unwavering dedication to mitigate environmental impact.”
Elan Foundation has a history of undertaking similar environmental initiatives, reinforcing its dedication to ecological conservation and community well-being. The post-plantation care of the plants and trees will be meticulously managed by the Elan Foundation to ensure their healthy growth and sustainability.
