Maharashtra plans to amend rules to evict BDD chawl tenants

Faced with stiff opposition from a section of residents refusing to vacate their tenements, the state government is contemplating modifying Development Control Rules (DCR) to make evictions in the Bombay Development Department (BDD) chawls easier. The BDD chawls makeover project is being executed by MHADA. Milind Mhaiskar, the vice chairman of MHADA, had made requests to the housing and urban development departments to change DCR 33 (9) (B) under which the BDD chawls are governed. The MHADA Act has provisions, which enable the development body to forcibly evict people from their houses if they oppose redevelopment.
